Is soccer betting legal in Canada?

The short answer is: Yes.  It is easy for some people to be confused by the issue of the legality of sports and soccer wagering in Canada.  Some people wonder why sportsbook companies advertise on television but always finish their ad by saying “this is not a gambling site” and that the site they are advertising is only for fun or for checking scores and odds.  You see, companies like those below are not allowed to advertise their sports betting, casino or poker games services where players actually use real money.  Thus, what you will always see and hear being advertised is the “dot-net” version of their website.  This will be a completely free, educational site.  Since no money is at stake with these free and educational sites, the companies are allowed by law to advertise them.  Of course, the companies involved hope that you will recognise their brand and simply navigate to the regular site that does involve real money.

Certainly this seems like an odd rule to for these companies to adhere to, since the free brand and real-money brand are identical.  But at least this explains why you only every see “.net” sites advertised.  Don’t let it confuse you, online sport betting is legal in Canada for the consumer.  It is illegal to operate a sports betting operation where single bets are accepted.  This is why lottery sports betting games all require parlays or combination bets.

The second thing that can confuse people is our proximity to the US, where gambling online has been made much more difficult and illegal for some.  Prior to 2018, the US Federal government made it difficult to move player money to the sports betting services as credit card companies were no longer allowed to process such transactions.  Rest assured there is no such set of laws or restrictions in Canada and in fact, Canada is home to one of the most popular and important gaming and sports betting regulation jurisdictions, that being the  Kahnawake Gaming Commission which is a Mohawk Territory located just outside of Montreal.  Kahnawake regulates Sports Interaction, which are listed below.  Sports Interaction only serves players in Canada.  So you can see why the legal landscape with regard to online sports betting in Canada can be considered ‘grey’ or a little confusing.  For more information, you can read about Canadian sports betting laws & taxes.  In the end, know that all the offshore sports betting providers, including Kahnawake (as it is a sovereign nation) are allowed to offer their service from their jurisdictions and cannot be prosecuted for serving customers in Canada.  As such, since the operator is essentially immune, there is no risk for the customers that use these services.

In 2021, Canada moved to fully allow single-event sports betting within its various provinces.  Kahnawake was always outside this jurisdiction, but the rest of the country is starting to catch up.  With bill C-218 passing in June of this year, provinces may move ahead on sports betting in the manner they see fit.  Ontario is the province that is most aggressive in this area.  They will offer an uncapped licensing framework towards a competitive market full of competitors.  This will allow for perhaps 50 or more legal Ontario sports betting sites once their market is fully open later in 2022.

About My Soccer Betting Listings:

Why is my list so short?  I only list the sites that I consider to be the best for Canadians. Would it really make sense for me to research twenty betting companies and then rank them one through 20?  Would you sign up with sportsbook number 18?  Of course not!

This is why I keep things simple.  If a company doesn’t measure up against my Canadian perspective, they don’t get listed.

Why might a site fail to get listed?  A poor record of withholding bettor funds or placing limits on the accounts of winning players, not offering Canadian Dollar wagering or not offering mobile betting.

Each listed site has satisfied my review criteria, but there are differences in their service offerings, so read the reviews and choose based on your own preferences and requirements, not a bogus rating scheme.  If you like to shop for the best odds, it might make sense to register with more than one so that you can maximise your winnings.
